Our second project for IxD102 was to develop a 10 minute Design History Presentation in groups based on one of the following topics:

My group decided to pick ‘Design Systems for the Olympic Games’. For our initial research, we each decided to pick an Olympic Games and research the design systems of it, focusing on the colours, typography, icons and emblems, brand values and other types of design used. We did this as it was important to use to learn what a design system was and what it involved as we were all a bit unsure what it was.

Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games

I decided to base my design system research on the upcoming Paris games in 2024 and how these games are going to be so different that any other game before, from the actual games itself to the designs that have been used.

Olympic Brand Values

The brand values of Paris 2024 focus on the French people and their passion, elegance and enthusiasm. Using eco-branding, they want to promote a positive image of the host city, Paris and its playfulness, modern feel and timeless heritage. They aim to achieve this using 5 principle elements: their emblem, colour scheme, art deco typeface, iconography and graphic identity.

They have decided to use eco-branding, looking at how they can sustainability create and display their products in an environmentally friendly way. The designers of the new Paris 2024 typeface used eco friendly techniques to create it by using tightly drawn letters, limiting the use of materials such as paper and coloured ink when working by hand and reduced power consumption when working digitally due to it being a single font file. By using this, they could create an eccentric, geometric typeface but in an eco friendly way.

Another Eco branding example is their idea to use light and dark mode when displaying the Paris 2024 emblem. When displayed on paper as a physical copy, the ‘Marianne’ emblem will be displayed in light mode to reduce ink consumption and will be displayed on dark mode on screen to limit the power and energy consumption. As this is an emblem symbolic of change it was designed using minimal data and to be used by both the Olympics and the Paralympics - the first time ever!!
