Participant: 9-year-old child attending hospital for asthma treatment

Context: Experiences anxiety around hospital visits due to uncertainty about what will happen.

Technology familiarity: High — regularly uses apps such as TikTok, Snapchat, Roblox, and Toca Boca and browses the App Store independently.

She finds the overall hospital environment quite scary due to her not knowing what is going on and unsure what is going to happen but says her mum helps guide her through the experience and sometimes tells her what is going to happen if she is overly scared.

She says she would really benefit from a narrative story app so that she would know what is happening, how long is left and what she needs to expect for her appointment.

We started off by having a casual chat about hospitals, her current experiences and how it made her feel. I showed her multiple screens of my mid-fidelity designs so far and asked her questions about what she thought about how it looked as well as explaining the expected functionality and asking her how the interactions felt.

• Liked the name Compass - could tell me it was about guiding you in the right direction
• Doesn't know how they would sign up with email/ create user/ password and would need parental support to do these onboarding steps
  • Is creating an account needed?
• Would know what their appointment type would be but would need help with date / time etc
• Likes the ability to add a companion - makes it feel more fun and interesting
  • Wouldn't call it companion - maybe friend etc
