Colour Scheme

I wanted to incorporate colours to my app which were both calming but also fitted in with the common colours found in musicals. When researching it was found that calming colours change from person to person however the popular answer was blue, green or purple. Blue evokes a sense of tranquillity, calmness, and relaxation, green is associated with nature and can create a soothing and refreshing effect and purple is known to evoke feelings of serenity, balance, and harmony. However it really depends on the shade or hue of the colours as not all give off a calming effect! When looking my own colour schemes, I am looking at the monochromatic colours to maintain a theme and consistency throughout my app.

The first colour I looked at was #9DCEEC, a baby blue colour which I coloured matched off a dress from Glinda, the good from the musical wicked. I feel this colour would suit my app quite well as it also matches the colours of other musicals such as Waitress and Matilda.

The second colour I looked at was #00A07C, a turquoise green which I coloured matched from the background set of Wicked in the West End. I wanted to find a colour that was more green to see how it looked compared to the blue. My only worry is it is very similar to Spotify.

Finally taken from the SIX the musical poster, I found #EAAAF6, a light lavender pink colour which is really pretty although I am not sure if I would want it to be the colour scheme for my app. I will definitely experiment with it although I think I might stick to the green or blues.

I also really liked the colour #3E658C, a deep darker blue which also matches the colour scheme of multiple exisiting musicals.

After creating a quick layout in figma with my chosen colours, i was able to whittle it down to the 2 blue colours as I think they fit the best especially with the white background.

Once I had settled on either of these colours, I put them into the material deign color tool to get some more colours for my colour pallette that worked well with them and also look at how accessible black and white type is against the backgrounds

After looking at this and taking the accessibility into consideration, I have decided to opt for the darker deep blue as it is the more accessible of the two, it is calming and it has tones that match lots of existing musical colours.

Type

I am using the typeface Atlas Grotesk Trial for my music app. I chose this typeface as it is quit similar to the one used on existing music apps and it is clear and readable even in the smaller type sizes. I also decided to use the type scale as a guidance for what size my headings and smaller description text should be. These little things will help me piece my website together.

Illustrations

I created a number of illustrations of popular musical characters using procreate on my Ipad. Creating these was a way of me challenging myself as I am not what artistic. These will be used throughout my screens, especially in headers to help tie the app together. The overall process of me creating these took a number of hours despite how simplistic they look but I am very happy with the outcome of them

Icons

I used a number of different icons which I sourced from the noun project. I had to ensure that all the icons were the same style and type so that they would all match and work together or else it would look very random. I have mainly focused on using glyphs for my music app as I like the way the solid icons look against the background, this is just my personal choice as I feel line icons would leave a lot of white space and also just not look as good within my app.
