Nieslen Norman Group describes a sitemap is a visual representation of the organisation and hierarchy of content within a digital product such as a website or app. It typically shows all the pages or screens and how they relate to one another in a structured diagram using rectangles and connecting lines to illustrate parent-child relationships and navigation hierarchy.

Example of a Sitemap
Sitemaps are mainly used as a planning and communication tool to visualise how content fits together and provides a bird’s-eye view of the product’s structure, making it easier for designers, developers, and stakeholders to understand the scope and organisation of content.
It also helps you identify any gaps or redundancies in content and structure as well as ensuring all necessary pages are accounted for before detailed design or development begins. They are not always shown to end users, but they play a critical role behind the scenes in aligning teams around the product’s layout and content strategy.
