I started off sketching some ideas for my Pollen detection idea:

I tried to express the raise and fall of pollen in the air in different ways. The first way I attempted was using warning signs of different colours to how the high, moderate and low levels of pollen.

Next I used arrows to express if the level of pollen in the air was increasing or decreasing as well as creating a little home screen for this.

I attempted the idea of using tissue boxes with tissues telling your the pollen forecast however when I put pen to paper I didn’t really like this idea.

I finally I created two different ideas based on the pollen in trees, flowers and grass and the level of pollen they are producing and spreading. One I created using more realistic imagery and one I created using characters.

I then had a look at creating some sketch ideas for my insulin and blood sugar levels UI idea. I though it would be fun and more interactive to use different characters that reflected the emotions of what happens when your blood sugar levels are low/ high/ where they should be. I also thought this would be a fun idea to push myself out of my comfort zone as I wouldn’t call myself a great drawer.

Low Blood Sugar:

When your levels are low, it is said you feel emotions of anxiety, fear and a lot of concern. To reflect this I created a blood drop that looks quite anxious and scared. I added a little sweat drop on the forehead to help paint the picture as well as the emotions.

High Blood Sugar:

High blood sugar levels is said to cause you to feel angry and sad. For this I created two characters, one very irritated and angry and one who is sad and crying.

Finally for normal levels I created a happy blood drop as you would be feeling your normal self.

After sketching out my characters I decided to sketch how they would look with the smartwatch UI. I wanted them to be quite large as they are expressing the emotions the individual might be feeling alongside the text “Feeling like this?” and them telling them the level of their blood sugar levels in relation to the character and how high/ low it is.

I then went on an redrew each character again this time trying to focus on the shape of the drop and making them look more similar is face placing, arm and leg length etc. I did this so it would hopefully be easier to get an idea of how I want to draw them on procreate.

<aside> 💭 Reflection

After sketching ideas for both, I decided to discard my pollen smartwatch UI and develop my blood sugar tracking smartwatch UI further. My reasoning behind this is I much prefer the designs I created for the blood sugar UI and it has a more interactive smartwatch feel than my ideas for the pollen UI did. Choosing the blood sugar smartwatch UI also allows me to further challenge myself and my skills as I get to draw the characters for it digitally.
