What Is Usability ?

The Nielsen Norman Group describes usability as an attribute that measures how easy user interfaces are to use. The concept was popularised by usability expert Jakob Nielsen and focuses on how effectively users can interact with a product to achieve their goals. They define usability through five key components:

Why Is Usability Important?

Usability is important because it ensures that a product is easy, efficient, and enjoyable for users to interact with. When a product has good usability, people can complete their tasks quickly and with minimal confusion, which improves their overall experience.

The usability of a product can be detrimental as when usability issues cause the user frustration and errors, they may abandon the product or give up. This could be due to a design being confusing, users struggling to find information or misunderstanding instructions. By prioritising usability, designers can create interfaces that are intuitive and accessible, allowing users to navigate and complete tasks with confidence.

What Is A Usability Test?

Usability testing is a user research method used to evaluate how easy and effective a product is to use by observing real users as they attempt to complete tasks. The goal is to identify usability issues, confusion points and areas for improvement in the design.

During usability testing, participants are given specific tasks to complete using a prototype or product, while researchers observe how they interact with it. Participants are usually encouraged to think aloud, explaining what they are doing and why. This helps researchers understand the user’s thought process and identify navigation, wording or functionality problems/ issues.

The insights gathered from usability testing help designers improve the product so that it is more intuitive, efficient, and satisfying for users. Rather than relying on assumptions, usability testing allows teams to make evidence-based design decisions based on real user behaviour.

Why Should I Complete A Usability Test?

The purpose of usability testing is to see how people naturally interact with a product without having to think about what they are doing. When a product has strong usability, users can complete tasks smoothly and intuitively.

Good examples of apps with strong usability are social media apps such as Instagram or TikTok or the BBC website. Although these platforms provide help sections, most users rarely need them because the interfaces are designed to be clear and easy to use.
