Vic Bell is an English illustrator, iconographer and brand designer creating icons for the likes of Netlify and Uber and illustrations for Burberry. She currently works in Durham working remotely for Gitlab as a senior illustrator and on her own personal products. She has also worked on other projects such as branding, illustration & iconography projects for With Jack and Scratch and iconography projects for Uber, Burberry and Blink. Currently, she is working alongside the software company, Teamwork to create web illustrations and iconography for them.
In 2017, Vic created a number of scalable icon systems which could be used on both mobile and web. Designing over 300 different scalable icons, Vic focused on creating the largest icon design first and reduce them in size for smaller icons keeping the meaning and specifics of the icon. All icons were based on specific icons that uber needed for drivers. All the icons have such a simplistic feel but from a quick glance you know what they are meant to be, even the smaller icons with less detail are easily distinguished. I really adore Vic’s talent for simplistic iconography creation and it is something I want to learn to create and implement in my projects.
Vic recently worked alongside Burberry to create a set of icons for their nearly redesigned website. She created these icons in multiple sizes as well as a guideline for future iconographic use. When it came to the aesthetic and guidelines for working with Burberry, Vic wanted to very much keep the original aesthetic but as a modern twist. She ended up with a 14px and 18px design and created a brand guideline based on a 28px grid. I really like how Vic creates her icons in different sizes but creates each size to look slightly different with more or less detail depending on the size.
