Eva-Lotta Lamm is a designer, author and visual thinker. She grew up in Germany before working as a UX / digital product designer in Paris and London for Google, Skype, and Yahoo! After a 15 year long career, she moved back to Berlin and shifted her professional focus to her life-long passion of visual thinking. She does this through running her own business designing both physical and digital products that teach a global audience to use sketching as a tool for understanding, thinking and communicating more efficiently.

Her mission is to empower people to make the complex problems they face in their work and daily life visual so they can ‘see’ them from a fresh perspective and solve them with more confidence, creativity and clarity. She normally does this by speaking at international design conferences on the topics sketching and visual thinking. We watched a segment of her speech from a conference in Berlin where she shared some foundational principles of sketching pragmatically that will help you answer questions visually with a pen as well as tips that make your sketches clearer.

Eva-Lotta Lamm – Pragmatic Sketching – btconf Berlin 2022

<aside> 💭 Some of the key points I took away from it was using one of the 5 basic elements to start my drawing and then gradually building it up by adding other elements, colour and shade to create my finished piece as it allows you to visually convey information in a clear and straightforward way which is easily comprehensible. I also learned about how pragmatic sketching allows us to frame and define problems, breaking down more complex issues so they are easily understood and allow us to then quickly iterate some solutions and new ideas for the problem
